Seems like the history of State of Origin has been lost by this generation. Or they just don't know it, so I feel it needs to be told.

Qld and NSW have been playing Rugby League against each other since 1908. From 1908 to 1979 the rules of team selection were based on Residency ie. where you lived. This resulted in alot of players who were born and grew up in Qld being picked to play for NSW due to the fact that they played in the richer NSW (Sydney) competition. Qld greats like Beetson, Boustead, Close and alot of others were picked by NSW to play for NSW against their own state of Qld. Due to this "cheating" by NSW from 1908-1979 State of Origin was introduced in 1980.

The rules of selection for State of Origin are quite complicated https://www.nrl.com/portals/nrl/RadEditor/Documents/CorpHospitality/OriginEligibilityExplained.pdf

but these rules were brought in to overcome NSW's "cheating" from 1908-1979.

This turning to State of Origin resulted in Qld becoming the dominant State in Rugby League. Although NSW have a far greater player base to select from and alot more financial backing, this Qld dominance was not taken very well by the much richer NSWRL. Thus began a decade of NSW "dirty" tactics through the 1980s.

Dirty tactics such as Les Boyd breaking Daryl Brohman's jaw.

1984 Steve "blocker" Roach recounts the tale of NSW players being ordered by NSW officials to just "fight" rather than play, right from the kick off

    [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIaojMCxdLw[/ame]

1991 Mark Geyer recounts being told by NSW officals that his acts during Origin will not result in his being suspeneded as the Judiciary is fixed for him.

Tom Raudonikis's famous "cattledog" call for NSW players to fight when NSW were losing a match.

    [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2PT49sgHIQ[/ame]

1995 NSW telling their players that the first Qlder to chant the famous "QLDer" chant was to get "a punch in the face"

    [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJEtFWovWt4[/ame]

The list goes on. This is why when Qld win it is Right triumphing over Wrong. Good triumphing over Evil.

Thus, for the last 10 years (since 2006) the Good guys (Qld) have triumphed over the Dark side (NSW) 9 years out of 10.

So remember, when you barrack for Qld you are barracking for Good (Qld) to triumph over Evil (NSW).

This game just keeps going downhill. It wouldn't surprise me if it ceases to exist within the next 50 years.

I've never much liked NRL but I did look forward to Origin time. It seemed to be the only time when NRL was played as it should be and made for some entertaining watching.

Now I don't even bother, It doesn't have anything to do with NSW losing as I never much cared who would win but rather the level of gameplay gradually growing poorer.

NRL is basically non existent in the western states and AFL seems to be growing in the eastern, plus soccer in Australia continues to gain strength.

I realise this will probably piss a lot of people off but if Golf is the gentleman's game then between the fans and the way the players act, NRL is the bogans.

[MENTION=513]SubNoize[/MENTION] the saying is "Rugby Union is the thug's game played by Gentleman. Rugby League is the Gentleman's game played by thugs".

Either way, both produce some of the greatest Athletes this Country (or the World) has ever seen.

P.S. Soccer is a poofs game played by girls. (I did play Soccer u6-7s and was a Superstar, if I do say so myself, represented my Region. But eventually I became a Man and played a Man's game).

yes it certainly had more meaning. Now due to its Professionalism its just a game of Football, albeit a very high standard game of Football with tremendous athletes.

Prolly better for me that the emotion is taken out of it. I used to hate that Blue jersey. :mad2:

I am in WA, but I started watching Origin about 7 years ago when I moved to Cairns for one year. I instantly liked the QLD team as they dominated and they were the 'local' team. Same with the Broncos. I hadn't watched much NRL, but always watched the Origin games.

This year was the first year I really started watching ALL the games. I've watched most of the important games from round 23 onwards and all of the finals games. Im absolutely hooked. Such a great game.

I can't get enough... now I have to work out wtf they are doing in Rugby Union so I can try to start liking that also. Thanks for the history lesson!

Gary Belcher - he was the original chanter of the chant "Queenslander!" while standing at Fullback back in the mid 80s. The chant "Queenslander!" was used when the chips were down and players had to dig deep in defence, to the last man to the last bullet, and all that. Billy Moore wrongly gets credit for that chant.

Paul Sironen - Big Siro. A great player when at his peak. So hard to stop. Now owns a Krispy Cream franchise or something.

Benny Elias - A great Blue but not a lot of love for him in Qld.

Tommy Raundonikis - "Warhorse" they called him. An old school player and tough as they come. Just a little Halfback but would fight anyone. He used to spar (Boxing) with the Broncos Forwards many years ago.

Grant Kenny - what position did he play?

John Burgess - bit of a stud like yourself big fella. Am I right [MENTION=3229]Charlee[/MENTION]?
